The now vacant AST/RO building at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is covered in frost at the beginning of winter 2006. The building, which once stood 20 feet above the snow, will be removed in the coming years. The AST/RO project began in 1995 and finished operations in the summer of 2005. The radio telescope scanned for submillimeter wavelengths and was responsible for several advances in astrophysics.
