The VLF Hut at Byrd

Radio Noise Building

The radionoise building was a buried vault 7000' north of the main Byrd Station complex. (Because of the caption, I originally thought this photo was the radionoise building, but Mike Trimpi advised that this was the VLF hut.) These Stanford University projects were related to what would become the ongoing VLF projects that continue to this day. This NSF photo appeared in the Bulletin of the U. S. Antarctic Projects Officer, Vol. 4, No. 9, Summer 1963. Caption: "Ward Helms, left, and Michael Trimpi record upper-atmosphere radio noise in a building constructed under the ice at Byrd Station."
