Painting the Pole

the Ceremonial Pole just after the Transglobe folks left
The Ceremonial Pole, just before it was repainted during the 1980-81 summer. The original orange and black paint had been applied to the then-flagpole in McMurdo in 1956. The repainting happened after Ran
Fiennes' Transglobe expedition had departed, as the photos of their visit show these same colors.

The definitive before and after photos:

Martha Kane Savage at the Ceremonial Pole
1980 winterover Martha Kane Savage (the second woman to winter, in 1980) at the Ceremonial Pole.
Cynthia Hagley at the Ceremonial Pole

Credits...the top photo by Nick Majerus is in the Antarctic Photo Library; the photo of Martha is from her husband Mike Savage who wintered with her; and the Cynthia photo is also from Nick Majerus.
