So...Mike Horn's traverse distance is listed as 4,713 km (2,929 miles) per that Eric Philips map. Alas, his detailed website blog of the venture is no longer around, but he mentioned on Facebook in this link (which opens as a video...see the text below it) that his direct line travel was 5,100 km (3,169 miles) and total distance traveled was 5,700 km (3,542 miles). Explorersweb reported that his start point was S70.1015 W 009.8249 (70º11'S-9º50'W), and I advised them that he finished at the French station Dumont d'Urville which is at 66º40'S-140ºE. I calculate that the straight-line distances between those two points (via Pole) is 4,804 km (2,985 miles) which is very close to what Eric Philips listed on that map. I give. |
