Palmer Station Winter 1993

1993 winterovers

[Dave Vella tells me that "Bill" was the resident sheathbill that had flown into the picture,
and "Spot" was a frozen USDA Prime whole hog had been discovered when cleaning out
the GWR freezer...hence it was, well, past its prime.]

Here's a larger newer version:

1993 winterovers
Yes, there IS this color version on the back. It's missing Dave Vella, who ended up using
this photo he had taken with Corey's camera. His camera (with autotimer to allow him to
get in the photo) froze before getting the "perfect shot" as he discovered later.

The 16 folks in the black-and-white photo:

Andrew Archer Science technician
Ronnie Baltz Materials person
Nicole Desaulniers Assistant laboratory supervisor
Tom Frazer UC Santa Barbara, biology
Tom Galles Power plant mechanic
Gloria Hutchings Supply
Joanne Keys MAPCON
Jacqueline (Jaqie) Mahoney UC Santa Barbara, biology
James (Jim) Meis Communications
Gerald (Rocky) Ness Station manager
Corey Peterson Administrative
Sarah Pizer Supply
Joe Shields Physician
Gary Stone Cook
Dave Vella Facility engineer
Carol Wyatt UC Santa Barbara, biology

The list in the June 1993 Antarctic Journal...only 8 people (!):

Andrew Archer Science technician
Ronnie Baltz Materials person
Nicole Desaulniers Assistant laboratory supervisor
Tom Galles Power plant mechanic
James Meis Communications
Gerald Ness Station manager
Corey Peterson Administrative
Gary Stone Cook

Several of the list discrepancies can be resolved from the science sitreps. Tom arrived on 5 June and departed on 25 September, Jaquie arrived on 5 May and departed on 25 September, and Carol arrived on 5 June and departed sometime in October. All 3 of these scientists were off station on times while participating in Polar Duke cruises. As for the 5 missing ASA personnel...I have no idea.
