Palmer Station Winter 1991

the blur

This photo is, from this distance, difficult. I have two versions from different years (both from Glenn Grant-thanks!) but both seem to suffer from issues, perhaps related to the (plexiglass?) cover and/or the soft muted colors in the photo. The above photo was extracted (and given a cleanup attempt) from my older copy of the photo hanging in the GWR stairwell.

1991 winterovers
Above, an older version of the photo taken in 2003.

1991 winterovers
And a newer photo after my cleanup attempt. Glenn took this in 2006.

The complete winterover list based on the above photo:
  ASA
Ronnie Baltz Materials person
Karen Butler Laboratory supervisor
Mike Butler Science tech
Hugh Cowan Physician
Robert H. (Fred) Frederick Station manager/facility engineer
Jody Hatchett Administrative assistant
James Meis Communications technician
Albert O'Kelly Power plant mechanic
Jamie Pierce Cook
Julian Ridley General assistant

The complete winterover list based on the June, 1991 Antarctic Journal:
Ronnie Baltz Materials person
David B. Carlini Krill studies, UC Santa Barbara
Hugh Cowan Physician
Tom Frazer Krill studies, UC Santa Barbara
Robert H. Frederick Station manager/facility engineer
Jody Hatchett Administrative assistant
James Meis Communications technician
Albert O'Kelly Power plant mechanic
Jamie Pierce Cook
Julian Ridley General assistant
Carol Wyatt Krill studies, UC Santa Barbara

But...David Carlini and Carol Wyatt arrived on 6 February, and Tom Frazer arrived on 29 March...and all three of them headed north on the Polar Duke on 8 June, so I have not considered them to be winterovers. Robert (Fred) Frederick's name in the photo is misspelled, as everywhere else (including science sitreps signed by him) use the Frederick spelling. Mike Butler was listed as the science tech in the June through September sitreps and was mentioned as being on station on 30 September, so he presumably left on the late October cruise. As for Karen Butler...Ronnie Baltz confirmed that she was the lab supervisor. [unedited original photo taken in 2003, 652k] and [unedited original photo taken in 2006, 2.7mb]
